By greenherbal11

Hyperlipidemia or high cholesterol is a condition developed when the levels of cholesterol in the blood become too high. Heart diseases, heart attacks and strokes have a higher risk of occurring with high levels of LDL cholesterol. Atherosclerosis is a hardening of the arteries caused by the LDL levels narrowing the arteries. LDL cholesterol affects the lining of blood vessels and by building up in the arteries walls. Lowering cholesterol levels becomes imperative in this case.

It is not a secret anymore that excess of cholesterol in the bloodstream can lead to cardiac diseases and strokes - both; America's No. 1 and No. 3 killers. Even though there are many things one can do lowering cholesterol, it remains difficult issue to tackle on a regular basis, i.e. constantly. One can lower down the cholesterol in the bloodstream by consuming healthful foods, shedding off the extra pounds and maintaining the healthy level of essential fatty acids.

Garlic. Garlic is a cholesterol lowering herb that is slowly but heavily gaining popularity. It has been shown through medical reports that it can increase the HDL cholesterol levels while lowering LDL levels. Studies have also shown that garlic can reduce both triglycerides and cholesterol by up to 15 percent. In one study, people who were given 800 milligrams (about one clove) of garlic daily experienced lower cholesterol levels as well as lower blood pressure.

The stem of the mukul myrrh tree produces a yellowish resin called guggul. For centuries, this Indian herb has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a supplement to lower cholesterol levels. Assisting with the breaking down of the LDL, it also seems to increase the uptake of cholesterol by the liver. For those who use about 25 milligrams of guggulsterone (the active ingredient in guggul extract) three times per day, studies have shown a potential decrease of 10 to 27 percent in cholesterol levels

Psyllium contains seeds covered by husks. Psyllium usually grows in India and Iran. Husks are generally used in foods as thickeners. Cholesterol levels can be lowered by the fiber in psyllium. Also, this fiber can influence the speed of the digestive process. When psillyum fiber is incorporated in a healthy diet, it can lower cholesterol levels with about 7 percent. Psyllium also prevents the body from absorbing cholesterol and aids digestion.

In order to lower cholesterol there are some researches that suggest that artichoke leaf extract (also known as Cynara scolymnus) may actually help. Artichoke leaf extract may work by simply limiting the synthesis of cholesterol in the body. It is believed that cynarin increases the bile production in the liver and speeds the flow of bile from the gallbladder. Artichokes contain this certain compound, and its intake may increase cholesterol excretion.
